چکیده

Pop-up targets, such as the items of popup menus, and animated targets, such as the moving windows in Mac OS X Exposé, are common in current desktop environments. This paper describes an initial study of pointing on popup and animated targets. Since we are interested in expert performance, we study the situation where the user has previous knowledge of the (final) position of the target. We investigate the effect of the DELAY factor, i.e. the delay before the target pops up (for pop-up targets) or the duration of the animation (for animated targets). We find little difference between the two techniques in terms of pointing performance (time and error), however a kinematic analysis reveals differences in the nature of the pointing movement. We also find that movement time increases with DELAY, but the degradation is smaller when the target is farther away than when it is closer. Indeed, larger distances require a longer movement time therefore the target reaches its destination while the participant is still moving the pointer, providing more opportunity to correct the movement than with short distances. Finally we take into account these results to propose an extension to Fitts’ Law that better predicts movement time for these tasks.

Research on Acquisition Probability of the Visible Light Reconnaissance Equipment to Ground Targets

The detection probability of visible light reconnaissance equipment is one of key indexes to assess the performance of the system. The detection probability is determined by many factors, such as atmospheric visibility, target-background contrast, target size and distance, solar elevation angle etc. Based on the detection probability model of the visible light reconnaissance equipment to gain t...

A Study of the Effects of Online Advertising: A Focus on Pop-Up and In-Line Ads

Web advertising has taken many forms, including those that appear within the Web page as an inline graphic, as well as those that "pop up" (over) or "pop under" a browsing window. Grounded in the concepts of perceived intrusiveness and the dual-process theory of cognition and perception, research provides theory-based expectations about how users come to view these ads as irritating and intrusi...

Role of frontal and parietal cortices in the control of bottom-up and top-down attention in humans.

We investigated the contribution of frontal and parietal cortices to bottom-up and top-down visual attention using electrophysiological measures in humans. Stimuli consisted of triangles, each with a different color and orientation. Subjects were presented with a sample triangle which served as the target for that trial. An array was subsequently presented with the target and three additional d...

Shading Shades

Procedural material shaders continue to pop up since the advent of fragment programmability. Most of these shaders concentrate on interesting animated effects. The cg shades demo successfully explores the use of fragment shader programming for a different kind of materials: Highly repetitive, man-made materials. The given code shows a variety of implementation options adapted to different usage...

Pop-up depth views for improving 3D target acquisition

We present the design and experimental evaluation of pop-up depth views, a novel interaction technique for aiding in the placement or positioning of a 3D cursor or object. Previous work found that in a 3D placement task, a 2D mouse used with multiple orthographic views outperformed a 3D input device used with a perspective view with stereo. This was the case, even though the mouse required two ...
